Data nowadays is mostly perceived as intangible, its material foundation hidden behind layers of abstraction that leave the typical user unaware. But before the digital age, information was physical; these analog methods of data representation, though phased out of use, maintain a particular charm within the lossy signals and physical mechanisms that characterize retro technology as we know it.
With the Retrotech series, we recontextualize past technology through a modern lens. The era before digital may have become a distant memory for most, but the nostalgic allure remains, and along with it an appreciation of what was possible within the limitations of the past—a sentiment we seek to explore throughout multiple works.
As our first subject of this exploration, ***tape recreates the process of writing any data to an audio cassette. Digital input is converted to sound and transferred onto a magnetic ribbon as an analog waveform, then played back both visually and sonically as an active display of how the same data representation can be expressed in multiple forms.
The captured scene may be imperfect, and the process takes its time, but such is the beauty of analog storage. Written with data of today, the resulting tape becomes a tangible expression of nostalgia and curiosity towards the tech that came before.
